FAQ/Resources for voting on Fishers Island Nov. 2020

Am I registered to vote?

Visit https://www.vote.org/ to find out if you’re already registered or to find other resources (even a handy election reminder tool, so that you don’t miss a deadline!)

How can I register to vote if I’ve never voted before?

You can register to vote in NY State if you are: a US citizen, 18 years old (you may pre-register at 16 or 17 but cannot vote until you are 18), not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction (unless parole pardoned or restored rights of citizenship), not claiming the right to vote elsewhere, and not found to be incompetent by a court.
To register:

Suffolk County Board of Elections

Yaphank Ave.

PO Box 700

Yaphank, NY 11980

  • Deadline:
Applications must be postmarked no later than October 9, 2020 and received by the board of elections no later than October 14, 2020 to be eligible to vote in the General Election.  To be safe, mail your form as soon as possible, but no later than October 1.

Can I register to vote on Fishers for the General Election in November, if I’m registered elsewhere in NY state?  If so, how?

Yes, if you are a resident of Fishers Island for at least 30 days before the election, you can change your voter registration to Fishers, using the Voter Registration Form linked above and available at this table.  Deadline:  your change of address must be received by the Suffolk County Board of Elections at least 20 days before the election (October 14). To be safe, mail your form as soon as possible, but no later than October 1.

Can I register to vote on Fishers for the General Election in November, if I’m registered in another state?  If so, how?

Yes, as long as your home state does not prohibit it, and you only vote once in the election!  Follow the instructions above for registering to vote.

Can I get an absentee ballot (and how) and what are the deadlines for absentee voting?

Currently you may qualify to receive a NY absentee ballot if you will be absent from your county/New York City on Election Day, OR unable to appear at the polls due to temporary or permanent illness or disability OR because you are the primary caregiver of someone who is ill or physically disabled.  These rules may change due to Covid-19, so stay tuned.
